Artist's Comments

Well, I finished it even though Photoshop froze twice while I was working on it! This started out as a simple sketch from an oekaki board, but it turned into something else completely. I wanted to make something that looked a bit like classical art, a Greek statue or something along those lines.

Used a lot of different references for this while trying to get that "classical" feel; the Doryphoros by Polykleitos, Michelangelo's David, Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, Antonine's Statue of a Wounded Warrior, and a few pictures of Billy Crudup for the face.

The survey results on my DA page asked for Doctor Manhattan to wear his mysterious sometimes-there-sometimes-not black banana hammock, although I did do the original drawing with all the good bits, like you'd expect from a classic statue!

Next drawing, maybe he'll give you cancer and then turn into a car.

I wasn't really certain what to do with the background, and I may go back and change it later. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this.

Comments and feedback are, as always, appreciated.

Edit: I changed the pecs, as per many suggestions from you awesome people. I think it looks much better now, I think. Now that I've changed the pecs, the lines in his legs and the lines in his neck and face are looking a bit out of place. I may have to play with this some more. Thanks again for the feedback, all!

Edit 05/05: Feliz Cinco de Mayo! I finally had a chance to work on this a little bit more. I've fixed the abdominal muscles and the pectorals and think that it's a little bit better now. I also added a bit of a glow to Jon; I knew something was missing, but couldn't think of what it was until someone pointed it out to me! Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. I really appreciate it. :)

Awesome character work! His hand reminds me of the hands in Michelangelo's the creation of Adam, and his expression is just boyish enough to say "this globe is my plaything."

I have not finished the comic yet, so I have definitely not seen the movie yet, but I know enough to observe you captured him before he passed beyond his bikini stage, much to my relief... Speaking of the bikini, it creates good passage from one side of the piece to the other because its value is similar to the background.

The face reminds me more of the movie (previews) than the comic, which is a plus for realism.

You also did a good job creating a cosmic setting with the stars and nebula centered behind him for depth.

I think by now you have responded to the comments about the pecks, because they look fine to me. The anatomy is well proportioned, and you have done a very good job creating the subtle motion of walking, which I know from miserable experience is not easy.

I deducted two half stars only because I look forward to more of your work and want to reserve a little room at the ceiling for future critiques.

The first half star is on Technique only because I feel the colors and values could be brought together more to integrate the figure with the space around him, i.e. lost and found edges could unify the piece. The second is on Originality only because it is not your original character. But still, this is no A-, but a solid A.

I offer the following as hopefully helpful suggestions for what they are worth. For example, if the hue of the nebula and stars matched his skin's hue more closely, and if the brightness of the background were brought up just enough, some small portions of him would loose their edge to the nebula, further integrating him with his surroundings.

Bottom line: Awesome pose, solid anatomy, and great expression, hope to see more.

Hmmm.... Let's see here...

The first thing I notice is that you did a great job making realistic looking kneecaps! Your general grasp of body structure is also spot on here. Good subtle foreshortening on the fingers which are also well structured and jointed properly.

Nice work with the angle on the head as well. That tilted to the back profile kinda shot that can be difficult to pull off so very often. And nice attention to the details of the ear as well!

The only thing that really stands out to me as being off is the linework for his pecs. I'd almost think that it would've been better if you had just relied on the same shading to define the pecs as you did for the abs.

nice work! love the positions of the head and limbs! they're so soft and natural yet maintaining his musculinity. The only critique i have is the abs... i think they're too pronounced as if they're juz laid on top. i think lowering the opacity on em and adding outlines on some areas would make em part of a whole. :)

But great job overall! even the BG! Suits the piece well!

:iconragnarok2k3:
I agree with the above comment oh the underlining of the pecks being too dark and not matching up with the rest of the muscular work, also the abs are too high, gotta remember he has a rib cage in there somewhere.

great work on the hands, the fore shorting overall and definitely on the head that's a tough angle to accomplish

War. War never changes. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything, from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage.

great shading! his limbs look rounded and softly muscled, as they should when trying to acheive that classical look. the hands are really well done! they're tough to draw (for me anyway) so more cool points for you! the pecs might be a teensy bit angular, and the abs, while well-proportioned, are much more defined than the rest of his musculature.
but dammit, that's it as far as i can tell. i love the sort of placid look on his face. there are all sorts of subtle nuances in this art that really help bring it to life! well done you! oh, you oughtta add Galactus floating around in there somewhere, too! :headbang:

Thanks for the compliments and the suggestions! I think I'll go back and work on the pecs, as that seems to be the biggest point everyone is bringing up.

LoL! I think Galactus would be in trouble if he met Doctor Manhattan!

I'm going to go back and work on the pectorals. I think that I'll take another look at the abs, too, but the abdominal muscles are generally connected to the sternum.

Thanks!

Thanks! I'll work on that!

Thanks very much! I think that there's a general consensus about the the pecs, so I'm going to go back and work on them. Thanks for the advice!

of course, he *is* Dr. Manhattan..maybe he just wants his pecs to look like that. and yeah, Galactus would only be like an annoying eye booger to the good doctor..

I'm going to echo the pectoral issue. With the majority of the musculature being shaded, the lines do throw me off, though not on the legs for some reason... Otherwise, bang up job, I like the mood of the piece.
